Name + Gender Marker Legal Clinics
Our legal clinics expand access to TwoSpirit, Trans, and Gender Diverse (2STGD) people across WA to obtain accurate identity documentation, enabling us to navigate spaces and systems with increased safety.
We bring together volunteer lawyers, attorneys, and social workers to provide information, resources, and individualized support to Trans people making changes to our legal name and/or gender marker on identity documents. At our clinics, attendees have free access to one-on-one support from volunteer caseworkers who can guide them through the process and paperwork for various documents and systems, most commonly driver’s licenses, passports, birth certificates, and Social Security. Community members can also apply for financial assistance to help cover associated costs.
Afterwards, attendees can more confidently navigate these various government offices and processes, equipped with the knowledge of what to expect and that their forms are completed correctly.
Ensuring our community has accurate legal documents has become even more critical in light of the Trump administration’s ongoing campaign to attack Trans people, and when the rules around name and gender changes on legal documentation continue to change every few months.
Our long-term goal is to broaden access for all 2STGD people to legal documentation that accurately reflects our names and genders, to reduce experiences of discrimination and safety risks, and to increase our community’s economic mobility.
