We hope that you have been able to stay safe and warm in the midst of this small cold blast we’ve been having! Being two months into the new year, GJL has LOTS of information to share with you. Please read until the VERY END for updates regarding our new Co-Executive Directors, Coalition Updates, winter volunteer opportunities, important reminders, and a little (tiny) bit of info about TransPride2019!

HERRO Coalition Update

"The HERRO coalition is a group of organizations dedicated to equity and accessibility in reproductive healthcare in Washington state.”

In response to the barriers transgender and immigrant populations face in accessing reproductive healthcare, the HERRO coalition is working on a bill called the Reproductive Healthcare Access for All Act (RHAA), designed to fill in the gaps in our current system of coverage.

If you have been denied reproductive healthcare in Washington state, such as hormones, birth control, abortion, STI screenings, or counseling and referrals for gender dysphoria, based on your transgender or immigrant status, and would like to share your story, please contact Gender Justice League at sarah@genderjusticeleague.org. Sarah will be able to walk you through sharing your story in a manner that you believe is most comfortable. If you feel comfortable, we can share your story with legislators and constituents (voters) to emphasize the real life impact of this bill. It would make a huge difference. Sarah is also available to take phone calls during normal business hours every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

Equal RIghts Washington Lobby Day

On January 21, we’re heading to join Equal Rights Washington for their Lobby Day. It’s a great chance to meet with our representatives and talk about the concerns and successes of our community. Join us!

To join GJL, email or call Sarah (206) 972-9989 during normal business hours.

Our Response to the Supreme Court Enforcing the Transgender Troops Ban

The US Supreme Court in a 5-4 decision granted the Department of Justice’s request for a stay on the lower courts preliminary rulings, which have been protecting transgender troops allowing them to openly serve in the military. With this stay on the preliminary rulings, the Trump Administration is permitted to enforce the ban on Transgender troops.

Volunteer Opportunities

As many of you already know, most of our office items get used once or twice a year - for Gender Justice Awards or for Trans Pride. We would like to move those once a year items into storage so that we have more mobility in our office. We need about six or eight volunteers to help us haul all of those things from the loft, load it into trucks, and unload it into storage. If you’re able to do this (or help Sarah organize it), email or call Sarah. (206) 972-9989 The date for the move is still TBD.

TransPride2019: Sarah will be looking into choosing team captains for Trans Pride. Sarah will contact each captain separately and captains must be able to meet weekly in March (in the evenings). Last year we had 200 volunteers and 15,000 attendees. This year looks to have our largest attendance yet! If you’d like to volunteer, start emailing Sarah. There will be more information in the next newsletter about teams available.

Important Reminders!

  • Equal Rights Washington Lobby day: February 21, 2019
  • The BIG MOVE: Date TBD
  • TransPride2019: June 28, 2019
  • Consider becoming a Monthly Donor! Click here.
  • Attend a Board Meeting! Meetings are held at the Gender Justice League offices on the third Sunday of every month from noon to three.

Whew! That was a long update! Thank you for reading to the very end, and we look forward to connecting with you soon. Remember, you can always get in touch with us via our website or call our office at 206-538-0423.
