Venus Aoki is a Performing Artist, transgender woman of color, and LGBTQ community-based organizer and activist.
Venus was born in Guadalajara, Mexico and migrated to Seattle WA at 19-years old to seek transition-related care and complete a transition she started back in Mexico. Venus experienced persecution in her home country simply because she was living her own identity. She was exposed to different forms of discrimination from anti-LGBTQ hate groups in Mexico.
Venus has been an advocate for the LGBTQ community for over six years and is a board member of local non-profit groups servicing her community, like Gender Justice League and SOMOS Seattle. Venus is a long-term volunteer for WAISN’s Rapid Response Network, which provides critical resources and support to undocumented immigrants and refugee communities. Venus currently works as Economic Justice Organizer for LGBTQ Allyship based in Seattle, Washington.
In this role, Venus does grassroots organizing with local restaurants to implement gender-neutral language in their floor service and values. Venus is also working with State Senator Rebecca Saldana’s re-election campaign to advocate for LGBTQ inclusive outreach and ensure these voices have a seat at the table. In Venus’s free time, she enjoys spending time with her family and friends, writing songs, and creating new visionary projects.
